Do you remember the best moments in the history of World of Warcraft? World of Warcraft has existed for a long time. In eight expansions and dozens of major updates, players killed the interstellar demon lord, traveled through time and space, saved the world, and fought on city-sized dragons. But even with so many big showdowns, there are some that stood out at the greatest moments in the history of World of Warcraft.
The Corrupted Blood incident
Most of the events in this list are intentional, but the "corruption and blood disaster" is the result of a small error that caused the entire server to be destroyed for several days. It all happened in 2005 when a new commando Zul'Gurub was added to World of Warcraft. In a raid, a Soulflayer boss named Hakkar inflicted a curse known as "fallen blood" on the players, causing them to quickly suffer fatal injuries. In order to avoid infection and death of the entire team, since corrupt blood is highly contagious, players must be dispersed. However, what Blizzard didn't realize was that if the hunter's pet corrupted blood and was fired (causing it to lay eggs), it would still suffer the blood of corruption when it was summoned again.
We don't know who is Patient Zero, but at some point, a player returned from Zul'Gurub and summoned their pet in a large city. The curse of Corrupted Blood spreads like wildfire to any nearby players. Within a few hours, every major population center on some servers was a ghost town, full of bones of dead players. NPCs may be destroyed, but they will not die, turning them into deadly asymptomatic carriers, forcing most players to compete for hills and avoid each other.
Some players have become plague doctors, using their healing powers to keep others alive, while others are willing to infect themselves and try to spread the blood of corruption to all possible people. Blizzard tried to create quarantine zones, but the trolls continued to destroy them, and "Corrupted Blood" destroyed the life of "World of Warcraft" for more than two weeks, until a patch was released that changed the way it cooperates with pets. Corrupted blood is such a fascinating moment that real scientists have studied it as a model of real-world diseases and how humans respond. These studies even helped them prepare for the Covid-19 pandemic.
Zombie plague
Looking back, the "Fallen Blood" event was a fascinating chapter in the history of "World of Warcraft", but at the time players absolutely hated it because it made it impossible for people to venture to big cities. However, a few years later, just before the Wrath of the Lich King unfolded, Azeroth was again infected by a deadly plague, which interrupted the game for several weeks. Only this time it was deliberate. In order to reproduce some of the dramatic content of "Blood Plague", Blizzard created one of the most memorable release events in the history of "World of Warcraft".
At the beginning, the player found a mysterious crate in the southernmost port of Booty Bay. Anyone who interacts with these crates is infected, and there are very few opportunities to spread the disease to nearby players. After a few minutes, the infected player will turn into a zombie and can attack anyone, regardless of their faction. A day later, these crates appeared in major cities along with infected cockroaches, further spreading the disease. To make matters worse, the zombie disease becomes more powerful-it takes less time to manifest and becomes more resistant to magical healing.
This pattern continued for several days, until every major city (and the surrounding area) became a zombie hell. This infection is almost impossible to cure or avoid, so players who become zombies are encouraged to find other people and attack them. Zombies are not a threat, but the plague spread so fast that the entire army of necromancers roamed around Azeroth.
Just like the "corrupted blood" incident, this will naturally disrupt the development of the game for many players who want to engage in daily business. The strong response eventually became so severe that Blizzard had to shorten the activity time.
Sargeras stabs Azeroth with a great sword
Many players think that the coolest events in "World of Warcraft" occurred in the early days, but the final stage of the expansion of "Arrow Legion" has undergone dramatic changes. In the final content patch, the player went on an interstellar adventure to the home of Draenei, Argus, and the main headquarters of the Burning Crusade. They are finally here to fight Sargeras, the biggest demon in the history of Warcraft, trying to block him and end his Demon Crusade forever.
But I think Sargeras had the last laugh. Once the player defeated the Legion’s last attack, they received an extended cutscene. Sargeras invaded Azeroth, hoping to destroy the soul of the planet and make it a new force. Instead, Titan (good guy) and Illidan (cute bad boy) used their combined power to magically attract Sargeras to another dimension. But when Sargeras was pulled away, he inserted his continent-sized sword into Azeroth.
This cutscene is not just for presentation. Players venturing to Silithus found a huge rapier, which can be seen from miles away. It was so large that it only took a few minutes to fly from the base to the hilt. This knife (and the wound it caused) contributed to the event that led to the next expansion, the Battle for Azeroth. However, even if we are going to make a new expansion now, the blade of Sargeras still protrudes from the ground and stands on the horizon of Kalimdor.
Cataclysm
You can't talk about the most important moments in World of Warcraft, not about the moments that changed the entire world of Azeroth. Everything changed after the cataclysm. Areas like "Dark Coast" were damaged by natural disasters, "Thousand Needles" was completely submerged, "The Barrens" was cut in half, and most of the original missions of "World of Warcraft" were replaced by The new missions are not only more diverse and interesting, but also tell a more coherent story for each area. This is the biggest and most dramatic makeover in "World of Warcraft" ever.
It is also the most controversial. The whole incident took place off-screen, and the black dragon Neltharion exploded from his home in Deepholm, breaking the boundary between the elemental plane and the physical plane. As far as we know, it reshaped Azeroth, but not everyone likes its new look. The old version of the area is gone, but "Cataclysm" also heralds greater changes: "World of Warcraft" is evolving into a different MMO from 2004, and not everyone is involved. This is why Blizzard finally launched the "World of Warcraft" classic server many years later.
The door of anger
In the early days of "World of Warcraft", its greatest advantage was the world of Azeroth and the way it allowed players to tell their stories in it. The narrative beats did happen, but they were messy. One day, you were fighting a troll, and the next day a lich. It can only follow a loose plot, and it can only be done through the endless text pages that accompany each task. Sometimes, you may get short and irrelevant cutscenes with some rigid animations. But all this changed in the Wrath of the Lich King.
In order to defeat Arthas and end his undead invasion, the Horde and the Alliance jointly launched a full-scale assault on the front door leading to the Icecrown Citadel. The two sides dispatched a large army, and the battle took place in an epic four-minute cutscene (embedded above). However, just as Arthas reached the final battle, the entire battle was interrupted by a group of undead forsaken, who were said to be under the command of Slevanas Windrunner. The Scourge can be picky about both the living and the undead of the compatriots under Alsace, so they tried to kill both sides in one go, hanging the poison box on the battlefield, forcing both sides to retreat, but it was not without room for loss.
Basically, this is the performance of World of Warcraft in the "Red Wedding" in "Game of Thrones": shocking betrayal, followed by the terrible scenes of countless soldiers who died in pain. The Wrathgate is easily the most memorable cutscene in World of Warcraft.
Gate of Ahn'Qiraj
Fifteen years later, the opening of Ahn'Qiraj is still the biggest event in the history of World of Warcraft. After thousands of years of silence, due to the influence of the old god C'Thun, the insect-like army of the Ziraj Empire was resurrected and threatened to overflow behind its scarab wall and sweep Azeroth. In order to stop them, each faction on the server must accumulate a large amount of handicraft resources, and the top guilds competed to complete a huge task consisting of 31 parts to assemble the legendary quicksand scepter. Then, the first player to complete the scepter can knock the gong in front of Ahn'Qiraj's Gate and trigger a huge battle called "Ten Hours of War". Once over, players can risk two new raids to obtain powerful loot and challenge the most iconic villains of World of Warcraft, such as C'Thun himself.
However, it is hard to overestimate how daunting this is. All factions must work together to accumulate millions of resources for war, and the hardcore guild to complete the scepter must defeat the stubborn nail raid, and even must obtain 42,000 oracle bones. Everyone has a role to play, and the fastest server took nearly three weeks to complete all the steps.
After completing all operations, thousands of players on each server gathered outside Gates to witness the ringing of the gong, which marked the beginning of the ten-hour battle. Most servers cannot handle all these players at the same time. The frame rate is terrible, and the connection is often disconnected, but the scene is incredible. When Gates finally opened up, thousands of huge monsters poured out, and players had to fight their open attacks all over Azeroth. Fortunately, the few lucky ones who managed to build the scepter and beat the gong before the end of the war received a unique mount and the title of Lord Scarab. Fun fact: Destiny 2 director Luke Smith is one of the few people.
